This is one of the most extensive communes in Brussels. It ranks fourth in terms of population.
The presence of many green areas, not to mention over 500 Ha of the Forêt de Soignes/Zoniënwoud, have made it a mainly residential commune.
The commune was formed in 1795, under French rule, through the union of Uccle/Ukkel and the seigniories of Carloo and Stalle. Many noble families had their mansions erected in the surrounding areas. Traces of such mansions remain in today's place names: Overhem, Stalle, Carloo, Kinsendael, Neckersgat/Nekkersgat, etc.

The commune, which lies in the south of the city on the road to the coal basins of Charleroi, grew rapidly thanks to the two major communication routes that cut across it: the chaussée de Waterloo/Waterloosesteenweg, towards Charleroi, and the chaussée d’Alsemberg/Alsembergsesteenweg, towards Wallonian Brabant.
Pleasant neighbourhoods of villas alternate with former village centres. There are also many listed buildings and sites.
The commune of Uccle/Ukkel covers 22.9 km2. It has a population of 76,732, or a population density of 3,349 inhabitants per km2 (as at 1st January 2008).
