This commune has two very different faces.
In the elegant and opulent neighbourhoods of upper Saint-Gilles/Sint-Gillis, the majestic houses stand as testimony to the various architectural styles that were all the rage at the turn of the century, in particular, Art nouveau. The genius of famous architects like Horta, Hankar, Pompe and Blérot is everywhere. Victor Horta's house has become a museum that attracts over 25,000 visitors a year.

The presence of South Station (Gare du Midi/Zuidstation) in the lower half of the commune has led to massive development projects, especially since the creation of the high-speed train (TGV/HST).
Halfway between these two entities lies the church square (Parvis de l’église Saint-Gilles /Kerkplein van de Sint-Gilliskerk), where a picturesque and colourful market operates daily.
It is close to Parc de Forest/Park van Vorst, and the creation of public domains has given birth to a "green alley" going from Parc Paulus/Pauluspark to the Rue de l’Hôtel des Monnaies/Munthofstraat.
The commune of Saint-Gilles/Sint-Gillis covers 2.5 km2. It has a population of 45,235, or a population density of 17,917 inhabitants per km2 (as at 1st January 2008).
