The tiny commune of Koekelberg peacefully sits in the shade of the huge Basilica, the fourth largest church in the world.
Although often criticised, the impressive pink mass which constitutes the Basilica is nonetheless an impressive historical object for architecture fans.
In recent years, the area around the Basilica has been reorganized in such a way as to highlight Parc Elizabeth/Elisabethpark.

The avenue du Panthéon/Pantheonlaan, which runs along the park, is resplendent with beautiful old town houses.
The completion of the Leopold II tunnel and the construction of prestigious buildings along the axe linking the Botanique/Kruidtuin, which is situated in the commune of Saint-Josse/Sint-Joost, to the Basilica, set off a trend of reconstruction in the northern access area to Brussels.
The commune of Koekelberg covers 1.2 km2. It has a population of 19,020, or a population density of 16,222 inhabitants per km2 (as at 1st January 2008).
