Etterbeek, the central commune of Brussels, incorporates the European district and the Cinquantenaire/Jubelpark-complex. Having been almost completely urbanised in the 19th century, this commune is very homogeneous-looking. |
For over half a century, Etterbeek was garrisoned. What are now the ULB and VUB university campuses used to be the parade grounds of the barracks erected between 1875 and 1883.
Closely located both to downtown and the forêt des Soignes/Zoniënwoud, Etterbeek also boasts quick access to the prestigious boulevard Louis Schmidt/Louis Schmidtlaan and the boulevard Saint-Michel/Sint-Michielslaan, which are a rapid way of reaching the European motorways.
Etterbeek has been blessed with green spaces such as Parc F. Hap/F. Hap-Park and the Jardin de Fontenay-sous-Bois/Tuinen van Fontenay-sous-Bois. The busy districts of La Chasse/Jacht, Rue des Tongres/Tongerenstraat and Place Jourdan/Jourdanplein with its reknowned market, prove the commercial advantages of this commune.
The commune of Etterbeek covers 3.1 km2. It has a population of 42,902, or a population density of 13,623 inhabitants per km2 (as at 1st January 2008).
